The Hungry Ghost Festival is an observation followed by many Chinese residents in the seventh month of the lunar calendar. It is believed that spirits from the afterlife are permitted to roam the earth in the seventh month and that when they do so, the living should make offerings to them in the form of paper afterlife money, food and drink and as well should also burn symbolic gifts offerings for them.
